Campaigning to Save the Beach

Local campaign group scoops British Naturism Award

This week local campaign group, Eastney Naturists, were presented with an award, in recognition of their services to naturism, on behalf of Pat Thompson, the President of British Naturism.   Ron Twining, Chairman of the Southern Region, handed over the award and complimented the group on their campaigning to keep the traditional naturist beach at Eastney open for all and added “This sort of local initiative is just what naturism needs – keep up the good work”.

Collecting the award were Mike Houlsby & Barry Knell of the Eastney Naturists Campaign Group.

Mike Houlsby commented: “This is a proud day for us.  It’s always good to have someone recognise that you’re doing a good job, but especially so when it’s your national organisation.  We are really thrilled to win this award.“

“We’ve found many non-naturist organisations, including the Eastney Neighbourhood Forum (which represents the local residents), very supportive of our concerns around the continued public access to this peaceful part of the sea-front.”

Barry Knell added: “The group has been about more than just campaigning or sun-bathing.  The threat to the beach has brought a lot of the naturists together & a community spirit has flourished.  Eastney Naturists have also helped to raise money for local charities, such as Portsmouth Lifeguards and Help a Local Child”.

British Naturism have been so impressed with the way that Eastney Naturists have organised and conducted themselves that they are calling for more beach user groups to be set up around the country using Eastney Naturists as a model.

Barry Knell continued: “This award is a reflection of the hard work and commitment shown by the Eastney Naturists Group.  We do need to make sure that all users of this beach are aware that it has now been privatised and we all face the possibility of being locked out.”

Mike Houlsby also added “Anyone interested in our campaign can view more details at our website at: www.eastneybeach.org.uk.uk, where there is also an active online forum.
